Artist Statement
The work is concerned with surface appearances, the lack of colour within the colour images hints towards the human condition concealed beneath a façade. The surface details represent a culture of artifice within business and networking events, a concept based on my own lived experiences within the business community. These experiences led me to believe that the nature of business is crammed with insecurity, anxiety and delusion.
Process Statement
Originally my project started when I was commissioned to photograph business and networking events for a regional development agency in the East Midlands in the latter part of 2002. I made images that reflected my own interpretation of how business operated inside an arena of networking and business events. In some ways I have an awareness of my own frailties within the business community, this is to say that I find the process of networking difficult and an artificial way of meeting people.
